Los Angeles’ Eastside: The New Europe

silverlake aerial

When you think of Eastern Los Angeles – most notably the areas of Silverlake, Eagle Rock and Los Feliz – does it remind you of Europe? According to the New York Times, and quite a few celebrities, East L.A. is being heralded as the new Paris…or London. As Gwyneth Paltrow surmised, “Silverlake is the L.A. equivalent of Shoreditch.”  She makes a good point.

Silverlake

Let’s examine the Shoreditch/Silverlake comparison a little more closely. Both were long forgotten neighborhoods that had seen better days.  And yet, quietly over recent years, Silverlake has attracted artists, musicians and writers who have set up camp and transformed the neighborhood into a vibrant community. Art galleries, outdoor cafes and boutiques now grace the main streets in abundance.  Locals can experiment with innovative cuisine, peruse well-stocked local farmers markets and still be on the cutting edge of a thriving new scene. There are also plenty of homes on the market that capture that European essence in this burgeoning neighborhood.

Feel free to contact me so I can find you your own little piece of Europe.  (Plane ticket not required.)
